PELLETS FOR THE STOVE

It is the  most ecological alternative  of thermal energy. Economic pellet natural heat

WHAT IS THE PELLET?

Pellets a fuel manufactured with fossil waste and totally renewable. It is a kind of biofuel (biomass), formed by a small conglomerate of just a couple of centimeters, composed of pressed sawdust and wood shavings. It is the most ecological alternative of thermal energy. In addition, precisely thanks to its own composition, makes it also the cheapest fuel on the market.

The manufacture of pellets occurs only and exclusively in the wood industry. Specifically, in Spain, in the northern areas such as Cantabria, Castilla y León or the Basque Country. And it is necessary that the wood to be used for the pellet is totally clean. If tree bark is included, sawdust can transport sand. And if we do not eliminate the leaves, we can get to chlorophyll and, therefore, that the fuel is contaminated with chlorine, causing damage to the boiler.

BENEFITS OF THE PELLET

The ecological benefits of pellets and biomass in general are more than evident. Everything that is recycled and take advantage of the resources that Mother Earth gives us is much more sustainable and respectful of it than artificial and chemical.

In addition, the use of pellets as fuel for the stoves, carries with it other advantages that must be taken into account. Especially if you have a country house, a second home or if your usual residence has large dimensions and is located in cold areas.
Less CO2 emission.

  • Less ash than firewood.
  • 40% cheaper than diesel.
  • Amortization in 4 years.
  • High calorific power

The pellet is capable of rapidly heating very large surfaces. For this reason, for homes in the countryside or in the interior, as well as those that are not usually always inhabited, the pellet is the ideal fuel to heat them effectively. No need to keep it in a dry place, the pellet can last a long time. A very important aspect if we are in cold or wet areas.

TYPES OF PELLETS FOR STOVES AND BARBACOAS: ENplusA1, ENplusA2, DINplus

“Using pellets of good quality is very important if you have a boiler or pellet stove or you are thinking of buying one. Low quality pellets can cause many performance problems and decrease the life of your installation. “

HOW TO BUY QUALITY PELLETS?

To have a guarantee of quality and ensure that you are going to buy a pellet with approved technical characteristics, we recommend that you obtain a pellet with seal or quality certificate.

Differences and characteristics among the three most frequent quality seals: ENplus A1, ENplus A2 and DINplus. We will also give you some advice to verify the quality if you can not obtain certified pellets.

Different certification systems with their corresponding guarantee seal to verify that the pellet arriving to the user complies with the established minimum quality characteristics, performing constant quality tests either in the manufacturing or distribution process.

There are different systems of pellet certification, including the quality certification system ENplus (the most present in our country) of the European Pellet Council (EPC), which in Spain is responsible for implementing Avebiom, the Spanish association for energy recovery of biomass and the DINplus quality certification system , from the German DIN CERTCO certification matrix .

The European standard EN 14961-2 refers to wood pellets for non – industrial use, establishes three levels of quality according to their technical specifications: A1, A2 and B.

  • Class A1 includes wood pellets of forest origin and residues of chemically untreated wood with low ash, nitrogen and chlorine contents.
  • Class A2 refers to pellets with ash, nitrogen and chlorine contents somewhat higher than the previous class.
  • Class B also allows the use of wood that comes from recycling.

The technical characteristics that Class A1 and Class A2 have to fulfill are the following:

  • Class A1:

Diameter D6 (+ – 1) mm or D8 (+ – 1) mm
Length: 3.15 – 40 mm
Density: Greater than or equal to 600 Kg / m3
Power rating: Greater than or equal to 16.5 MJ / Kg
Moisture: Minor 10%
Fine: Less than 1%
Ash: Less than or equal to 0.7%
Nitrogen: Less than or equal to 0.3%
Sulfur: Less than or equal to 0.03%
Chloride: Less than or equal to 0.02%

  • Class A2:

Diameter D6 (+ – 1) mm or D8 (+ – 1) mm
Length: 3.15 – 40 mm
Density: Greater than or equal to 600 Kg / m3
Energetic power: Greater than or equal to 16.3 MJ / Kg
Moisture: Minor 10%
Fine: Less than 1%
Ash: Less than or equal to 1.5%
Nitrogen: Less than or equal to 0.5%
Sulfur: Less than or equal to 0.03%
Chloride: Less than or equal to 0.02%

The categories established by the ENplus certification system are the same as those of the reference standard: A1, A2 and B. However, DINplus only certifies the category of the A1 standard.

Other differences between ENplus and DINplus are that ENplus certifies producers and / or distributors while DINplus only certifies producers.

In the market there are many other types of pellets of different qualities without guarantee seal. In these cases, it does not mean that the quality of the pellet is bad, but that there is no supervising body that guarantees the fulfillment of minimum manufacturing technical requirements.

WHAT ARE THE PELLETS MADE OF WOOD?

The pellets can be made of hardwoods (oak, iroko, tropical woods) or conifers (pine, fir, poplar).

WHY DO PELLETS OF DIFFERENT COLORS EXIST?

Normally the differences of color in the pellet are due to the form of drying of the raw material (sawdust), to the different pressure in the manufacture of the pellet or, in case of being a very marked difference, to the wood used in its manufacture .

Thus, pellets made with sawdust dried at high temperatures (higher than 200 ºC) have a darker color than those manufactured with sawdust dried at low temperature (less than 90 ºC).

Pellets manufactured with a higher compaction pressure will be darker (as well as harder) than those manufactured at a lower compaction pressure (softer). The lighter colored pellets are usually made with soft woods (pine or spruce generally) and the darker pellets are usually made with hardwoods (exotic woods).

NOTE: the differences of color refer to different shades (darker or lighter), but never to the existence of colors not related to wood.

Therefore if your pellets contain fragments of other colors (blue, green, white, etc.) they come from the recycling of other wood products (board, doors, etc.) and not from pure sawdust.

PELLET STORAGE?

One of the main characteristics of pellets lies in their great density, compressed into a small size. This makes it a high calorific product occupying little volume, so it does not require large storage spaces such as wood or chips.

In addition, its great consistency not only makes it more efficient, but the polluting emissions caused by its transport are also minimal compared to the rest of biofuels.

As for storage, the 15 kg bags are perfect for small homes. The user can transport and empty them by himself in the boiler or stove, in a simple way.

For large facilities that have storage silos for the material, the supply of pellets is carried out by tanker truck, which allows direct delivery to the customer without having to transport bags manually.

ADVANTAGES OF THE PELLET

Lower CO2 emission

The CO2 balance of the pellet is neutral, since the trees absorb CO2 during their growth. Therefore, after combustion, what is emitted is CO2 with air (Ashes).40% cheaper than diesel

In fact, it is estimated that in the colder regions, you save between € 500 and € 1,000 per year compared to the fuel cost needed for diesel boilers.Less ash than firewood

Unlike traditional fireplaces, the amount of ash generated is significantly lower. This involves less time spent cleaning.Amortization in 4 years

Thanks to the economic value of the pellet and its heat capacity, the purchase of a pellet stove is amortized in just four years.
